no sundays, be serious...

I wrote the following in response to one of my post recently: "@Nazra: Sundays are for going easy on many things actually, but beware that we tend to spend more money on Sundays. Sundays are always the time to indulge in all kinds of things, eating out, shopping, sightseeing, going to the movies and all those money spending activities. What would it be like if there is no Sunday? I want to write a post on this soon and invite others to comment too". That was my response to a comment to my post recently.

So here am i posing this question, what if we don't have Sundays in our life? Somehow to me, Sundays have always been associated with a rest day. Even if there's a public holiday falling on another day of the week, it's never the same feeling as that on a Sunday. Funny though.

I tried to look for the origin of Sundays and i found out (http://www.indepthinfo.com/weekdays/sunday.shtml ) that Sunday was for a long time considered as the first day of the week. For most Christian denominations Sunday is considered a holy day. Since ancient times, it has been designated a "day of rest" mainly for the purpose of contemplation and worship. Yet the name of Sunday has nothing to do with Christianity, but everything to do with even more ancient religions.

The ancient Greeks knew that the sun was the source of life on the planet and they gave it prime importance in their thinking. When the Romans later adopted the seven day week they emphasize their respect for the sun by naming the first day of the week for it..."dies solis"..."day of the sun".

The actual word "Sunday" is derived from the German word "Sonntag" (and they likely got it from the Scandinavians). These folk too placed a great deal of importance on the sun. Some tribes of these Germanic peoples invaded England in the 500's or so. They were known as the Angles and the Saxons. The old English work was "sunnandaeg" and it changed over time to become our current, "Sunday".

Wow, there you are, the origin of Sundays. And as for me now, when it comes to Sunday, its definitely a day of rest.

Sunday is also actually a good excuse:

1. not to work at all, nil, zero work.....absolutely
2. to tell the spouse to throw the rubbish out herself
3. to just laze around in the house (don't forget the steaming expresso!)

4. to wake up late, have late breakfast or just a brunch

5. not to run errands for the spouse

6. to close the eyes and listen to some nice music without any disturbance

7. to enrich the newspaper vendors by buying extra dailies

8. to go to the movies, live shows, shopping, eating out at fancy eateries
9. to talk to my freshwater & saltwater fish
, bluuuurrrrgh!
10. (off late) to talk to my underwater plants.....how weird, see picture of my new hobby, mini underwater gardening.
11. ....(and these are but some samples of my activities on an ordinary Sunday)

(***underwater gardening at work)

What would my life be had there been no Sundays? Come to think of it, life could be quite miserable. Having Sundays is quite a good excuse to indulge in lots of things which i don't normally do on other days. No Sundays? No life bro'!

So to those reading this post, don't you like Sundays and what would your life be like if there're no Sundays to live through. Share some thoughts with me here ya.....!

siesta eh? i stopped doing that quite a while ago since i tend to take too long a siesta session and it became rather unproductive. So i kept myself busy doing other things to avoid the siesta.

(contd.)in one tank i added in some zebra tetras & neon barbs (small fish) whilst the other tank i've only plants. It took me some time to get the water clarity perfect, initially it was quite frustrating but after getting the perfect water clarity i can now sit back & enjoy the view with my favourite music playing in the background.

Sundays should be just as you said, a time of no work, dining out, watering the plants since I have no fish, and just letting the rest of the world go mad without us...for one glorious day out of the week.

a 7 day week eh, still not bad you know, what if the days are on the metric scale, you'll be having a 10 day week then. And without any sundays wow that'll be a torture for most of us non-workaholics, heh3x.

Thank God there is a Sunday which is a declared Public Holiday, otherwise my wonderful management(my Boss) would request us to work even on that day.

I work 6 days & really look forward for that one beautiful day called "SUN-DAY" eventhough it is RAINING on that day.

theBluesman said...

@Nazra:
the key word is 'fun', just wonder why they didn't call it funday

@Mystique Earth:
Fortunately the bosses wasn't given the liberty to declare Sunday as a public holiday otherwise you'll know the obvious answer to that.....!

Sunday.. mmm..u know that "Sun" means "kiss" in Indonesian. Just a light kiss. then everybody love to kiss/being kissed, don't they? so now the mistery has just solved. :D

i never take a shower early in this "kissday", after the lateness of getting off from bed, i sit in front of fully brunch menus. chat with my mom during snacking all meals. btw, it all "was", after my wedding, i wake up earlier and do the sleepycooking for my husband. still experiment and always encounter error(s) :D

i believe this is the first account coming out from a new bride and thanks for being candid about your "kissday", i kinda like this kissday thing. Don't worry it's always a trial & error in any marriage esp in the cooking menus but i'm confident that you'll improve over time. BTW i don't i've read yr post about yr honeymoon...or is it a secret?
